Michelle is focused on applying her expertise to help identify and develop an exceptional and effective clinical solution that positively affects the health needs and well-being of patients. After graduating from Athlone Institute of Technology in 2008 with a BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Michelle went on to complete an MSc in Pharmacognosy at University College London. She subsequently undertook a research opportunity with the Irish NutraMara Marine Functional Food Research Initiative. Her research investigated key problems relevant to the extraction and application of seaweed-derived compounds for nutraceuticals. Michelle published numerous peer-reviewed articles based on her research and graduated from Bangor University with a PhD in Chemistry. Michelle made the move from academia to industry in 2013 by taking up the role of Pharmacologist at ICON, one of the top clinical research organisations globally. She has contributed to the enhancement of digital solutions used by pharmaceutical/biotechnology clients, and clinical trial investigators and participants. During her time at ICON Michelle contributed to various stages of product development, such as competitor analysis, strategy formation, user-centred design and operational considerations of product implementation. In 2017 Michelle completed a Specialist Diploma in Medical Device Science with NUIG and she is looking forward to building on that positive experience by taking part in the Bioinnovate programme. Michelle is eager to observe, first-hand, the clinical issues of today, and to work as part of a team to develop a solution that eases the burden on healthcare professionals while also improving the patient experience.

Damien’s main professional interests and expertise lie in the areas of concept development, design control, and product commercialisation. A native of Galway, Damien graduated from Mechanical Engineering at NUI Galway and was subsequently awarded a scholarship to complete a research master’s in composite materials. In 2008, he obtained an MBA from Cairnes Business School at NUI Galway which strengthened his interest in innovation and entrepreneurship within the medtech industry. As a BioInnovate fellow, Damien’s goal is to capitalise on the world-class medical device development capability within Ireland to develop marketable technologies for improving user experiences and patient outcomes.
